Space, place, room, area, location and square

Space

Space is an empty area that is available to be used.

• "There's plenty of space in my new garage." -> «Hay mucho espacio en mi nuevo garaje.»
• "You must leave at least a space of one metre beween each plant." -> «Debes dejar al menos un espacio de un metro entra cada planta.»
• "There were plenty of empty spaces in the car park." -> «Hay muchas plazas libres en el aparcamiento.»

Expressions with space:

• to space out: to let time or silence between two actions

Place

place means "a portion of space occupied by a person or thing". It can also refer to a home, somebody's "house" or "flat", sometimes a "restaurant".

• "We had a picnic in a very beautiful place near a lake." -> «Tuvimos un picnic en un lugar muy bonito junto a un lago.»
• "What's your place of birth?" -> «¿Cuál es tu lugar de nacimiento?»
• "I couldn't find a place to park my car." -> «No pude encontrar un lugar para aparcar mi coche»
• "Come to our place and have a meal with us." -> «Ven a nuestra casa a comer con nosotros»

Expressions with place:

• There's no place like home! -> «¡No hay lugar como en casa!»
• To have one's heart in the right place: to have good intentions
• To take place: to occur

Room

Room is used to refer to an extent of space available for something or somebody. It also can be a part of a building enclosed by walls.

• "Do you have enough room to put your books and computer?" -> «¿Tienes suficiente espacio/hueco para poner tus libros y tu ordenador?»
• "There isn't enough room for this chest of drawers next to the door." -> «No hay suficiente espacio/hueco para esta cómoda junto a la puerta»

Expressions with room:

• room for improvement: more possibilities to improve your knowledge
• room for manoeuvre: opportunities to make changes
• room temperature: not kept in a refrigerator -> «temperatura ambiente»
• There's no room to swing a cat: a very little space

Area

Area is a particular part of a place, piece of land, or country.

Location

The location is the position of anything on Earth's surface.

Square

A square is an area of approximately square-shaped land in a city or a town, often including the buildings that surround it.
